Hannover 1777-LCR pfenning
This specimen was lot 73632 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $60. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Hannover. Pfennig, 1777-LCR. Zellerfeld Mint. Georg III (George III of Great Britain). PCGS AU-58 Brown. Another charming Wild Man design on the small but pleasingly spare palette of the pfennig. Chocolate surfaces offer lovely hints of cobalt and admit only the merest traces of wear. Attractive. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1760-78 along with another pfenning (KM 360.1, struck 1768-1801) with a monogram obverse. The monogram pfenning bore mintmaster's initials IWS. This denomination is spelled "pfennig" in modern German.
