Hannover 1780-CES ducat Fr-618
This specimen was lot 42271 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2026), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Calenberg: Hannover. Ducat, 1780. Zellerfeld Mint. Georg III (George III of Great Britain). PCGS MS-61. A delightful Mint State beauty, with powerful golden luster and crisp detail all around. Slight marks and waviness are noted, but the coin remains a stellar problem-free representative that will enliven any collection of European gold issues." This type was struck 1767, 1774, 1776, 1780, 1783, 1785, 1789 and 1795 but is rare. Friedberg lumps all the Harz gold ducats of George III under one catalog number but the SCWC breaks them into several types. The Duchy of Brunswick was divided and subdivided in the seventeenth century but was eventually reassembled as the Kingdom of Hannover before being absorbed into Prussia in 1866.
