Afghanistan SH1298 1/2 rupee KM-876
This specimen was lot 3590 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $132. The catalog description[1] noted, "AFGHANISTAN: Amanullah, 1919-1929, AR 1/2 rupee, SH1298, king's name below al-ghazi, date below the word al-shamsi // denomination above mosque; both sides within wreath, mount partially removed (this is the example illustrated by Hamidi), F-VF, RRR, ex Hakim Hamidi Collection." Coins of this period are sometimes dated on the traditional Muslim calendar, or on the Solar Hegira calendar, as here, which starts on the same date as the traditional Hegira calendar but uses solar years rather than lunar years. This type was struck SH1298 only and is the scarcer of two varieties (KM 875 having a star over the obverse legend).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 4.75 g, 0.900 fine silver, 20 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-876, Hamidi-33H.
