Afghanistan SH1299 abbasi KM-882
This specimen was lot 3597 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $450. The catalog description[1] noted, "AFGHANISTAN: Amanullah, 1919-1929, billon abbasi, SH1299, al-ghazi atop the obverse; gorgeous strike, choice VF, RR, ex Hakim Hamidi Collection. We have not determined why the weight of the billon abbasi was so substantially increased between SH1298 and 1299." Coins of this period are sometimes dated on the traditional Muslim calendar, or on the Solar Hegira calendar, as here, which starts on the same date as the traditional Hegira calendar but uses solar years rather than lunar years. This denomination was struck SH 1298-1303 and this is the scarcer of the two varieties for the year, the other being KM 883.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: billon, 25 mm diameter, this specimen 7.83 g.
Catalog reference: KM-882, Hamidi-37B.
