Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 1722

This specimen was lot 1722 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €750 (about US$975 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Constitution (1791-1792), Métal de cloche 2 sols, 1791 K, an 3, Bordeaux. Type FRANCOIS. D/ B. dr. à g. R/ Faisceau dans une couronne de chêne. Rare. Deuxième semestre. presque Superbe. (France, constitutional period, bell metal double sol of 1791, year 3, Bordeaux mint. Obverse: draped bust left; reverse: fasces with a crown of oak. Rare, second semester, about Extremely Fine.)"

This coin was minted at Bordeaux during the throes of the Revolution. 1793 was the year the king was tried and executed. Amid the chaos, large quantities of these copper two sols were issued, along with six and twelve deniers (¼ and ½ sols). The 1791-93 issues bear the bust of the king but his ouster forced the removal of his portrait. This type was hurriedly and crudely made and is rarely found better than Very Good.

Reported Mintage: unknown but a better date.

Specification: 24.47 g, bronze or brass; this specimen 22,89 g.

Catalog reference: KM 603.8, Dupl-1722; Gad-25.
