Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 57263
SB823-57263r.jpg

This specimen was lot 57263 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Gold Peso, 1878-Cn G. Culican Mint. PCGS AU-58." Many gold pesos have tiny mintages yet are not rare because of hoarding. This one, however, is the key of the Culiacan series, which spans 1873-88, 1891-1904. This example realized five times the catalog value.

Recorded mintage: 248, the key date.

Specification: 1.69 g, 0.875 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-160; KM-410.2.
