Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 51297
SB124-51297 rev.jpg

This specimen was lot 51297 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. War of Independence. San Luis Potosi. Sierra de Pinos. 1/4 Real, 1814. Ferdinand VII. NGC EF Details--Environmental Damage. Easily among the finest examples extant of this RARE royalist provisional issue. Almost invariably damaged or weakly struck in the center, this piece instead offers a full view of its distinctive obverse design. The reverse does exhibit some corrosion but remains legible and distinguishable. With only a small handful of other examples appearing in auction records, all clearly inferior to the present offering, this lot is an exciting opportunity for specialists. From the EMO Collection." We were unable to locate this town in our research. There are hints that this was a suburb or outlying village of San Luis Potosi where a mine was located but it now gone.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper.

Catalog reference: EMO-646 (Plate coin); KM-A172; Cal-121.
