Jean Elsen sale 150, lot 1332

This specimen was lot 1332 in Jean Elsen sale 150 (Brussels, March 2022), where it sold for €3,600 (about US$4,773 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AV louis d'or à l'écu, 1690I, Limoges. 1e réformation. D/ T. vieillie à d., coiffée d'une perruque laurée. R/ Ecu de France couronné. Rare Fine griffe. Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, gold louis of the shield of 1690, Limoges mint, first reformation. Obverse: laureate and peruked aged head right; reverse: crowned arms of France. Rare, fine scratch, Extremely Fine.)"

This specimen is a louis d'or a l'écu, struck at the Limoges mint as part of a series of "reformations" that occurred in France during the 1690's and 1700's. The type was struck until 1693 and was superseded by the louis d'or aux 4 L, which was issued 1693-1700. While no gold coins of Louis XIV can be called inexpensive, this period is the most available until the louis d'or aux lunettes of 1726-40.

Recorded mintage: 200 fn + 103,346 rf,[2] a fairly common date.

Specification: 6.75 g, .917 fine gold, reeded edge, designed by J. Röettiers, this specimen 6,69 g.
