H61259-99063r.jpg

This specimen was lot 99063 in Heritage sale 61259 (Dallas, TX, February 2022), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XIV gold Louis d'Or 1691-H AU Details (Bent) NGC, La Rochelle mint. Louis d'Or a l'Ecu. Flan Reforme, star below shield. Harvest-gold patina abounds this eye-catching offering and, despite a flan crack and subsequent bend, displays an abundance of eye appeal and displays only the clearest and most well-expressed detail." This louis d'or à l'écu was struck 1690-93. This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here. The louis d'or à l'écu was succeeded by the louis d'or aux 4 L struck 1693-1700. Both these types are the first somewhat common gold coins since the 1640's but all are expensive relative to the silver écus. Droulers[2] catalogs this date as fairly common.

Recorded mintage: 19,195 fn plus more rf[2].

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, 24-26 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by J. Röettiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 406, Dr/2 № 258, KM-Unl., Gad-250 (R), Dupl-1435A.
