SB124-52008 rev.jpg

This specimen was lot 52008 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1691-G. Poitiers Mint. Louis XIV. NGC MS-61. An exceptionally beautiful Mint State Ecu, this charming example delivers rich details from a strong strike and soft toning atop the surfaces. Some clear evidence of an undertype is visible, only adding to the general charm." The specimen shown is an écu aux 8 L struck in Poitiers during the reign of Louis XIV. This type was struck 1690-93 in large quantities, mostly overstriking older écus ("flans reformés"--see the specimen shown for the visible undertype). It was succeeded by the écu aux palmes. Droulers[2] prices this date as common, but even a common date is priced two and a half times that of an écu à la mèche longue.

Recorded mintage: 606,366 rf + unknown fn, a fairly common date[2].

Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, 39-41 mm diameter, lettered edge, designed by Joseph Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Gad-216, Dr/4 № 508, Dr/2 № 396, Dav-3811; KM-275.5.
