Jean Elsen sale 144, lot 1695

This specimen was lot 1695 in Jean Elsen sale 144 (Brussels, March 2020), where it sold for €650 (about US$857 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AV louis d'or à l'écu, 1692A, Paris. 1e réformation. D/ T. à d. R/ Ecu de France couronné. Nettoyé. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XVI, 1643-1715, gold louis of the shield of 1692, Paris mint, first reformation. Obverse: head right; reverse: crowned arms of France. Cleaned, Very Fine.)"

This type was struck 1690-93 and is the first reasonably common type after the scarce dates of the 1670's and 1680's. The louis d'or à l'écu was succeeded by the louis d'or aux 4 L struck 1693-1700.

Recorded mintage: 16,162 fn + unknown rf[2].

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, plain edge, designed by Joseph Roëttiers, this specimen 6,67 g.
