This specimen was lot 99057 in Heritage sale 61259 (Dallas, TX, February 2022), where it sold for $3,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XIV gold 1/2 Louis d'Or 1692-A MS62 NGC, Paris mint. Flan Reforme. Overstruck on a Louis XIII 1643 1/2 Louis d'Or. Even though the example offered has a clear host visible, the devices are deeply-engraved and crisp, crowned by a sunny golden tone." This type was struck 1690-93 and while very scarce, is the first available type after the extremely rare dates of the 1670's and 1680's. Droulers[2] divides this issue into Dr/4 № 418 and Dr/4 № 419 based on two different hairstyles for the king. The demi-louis d'or à l'écu was succeeded by the demi-louis d'or aux 4 L, struck 1693-1700.

Recorded mintage: unknown but all rf[2].

Specification: 3.37 g, 0.917 fine gold, 20-21 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by J. Röettiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 418, Dr/2 № 262, KM 277.2, Gad-239 (R2), Dupl-1436A.
