SB223-73044r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73044 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $408. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/2 Ecu, 1692-P. Dijon Mint. Louis XIV. NGC AU-53. A wholesome example, this 1/2 Ecu displays a soft luster and shimmering beauty, with limited instances of handling on the surfaces. An appealing and pleasant piece for the French specialist." The specimen shown is an demi-écu aux 8 L ("half écu with 8 L's") struck in Dijon during the reign of Louis XIV. It was succeeded by the demi-écu aux palmes.
