Künker sale 293, lot 1851

This specimen was lot 1851 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €1,000 (about US$1,348 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"FRANKREICH, KÖNIGREICH, Louis XIV, 1643-1715. 1/2 Ecu aux palmes 1693, B, Rouen. Réformation. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Attraktives Exemplar mit herrlicher Patina, vorzüglich +. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, half écu of the palms of 1693, Rouen mint, reformed. Scarce in this quality, attractive example with beautiful patina, extremely fine or better.)"

The specimen shown is an demi-écu aux palmes ("half écu with palms") struck in Rouen during the reign of Louis XIV of France. This type was struck 1693-1701 in large quantities, mostly overstriking older écus ("flans reformés"). It was succeeded by the demi-écu aux insignes. Droulers[1] prices this date as common, but even a common date is priced 20% higher than a demi-écu à la mèche longue. A few of the prior type, the demi-écu aux 8 L, were also made in Rouen in 1693.

Recorded mintage: unknown[1].

Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, 37-41 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by F. Warin.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 618, Dr/2 № 412, Duplessy 1521 A; Gadoury 185.
