Stack's Bowers September 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 74717
SB925-74717r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74717 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $85. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 15 Deniers, 1693. Pau Mint. Louis XIV. PCGS VF-20. From the Richard August Collection." This quinzain was struck at Pau 1692-97 and is rather scarce. It was struck on new blanks (shown here) or "reformed" over older billon coins. So many circulated that the king decreed that it was illegal to put these in sacks to make large payments. The regime of Louis XV tried to do away with billon coinage but found itself issuing billon sols and double sols.

Recorded mintage: unknown[2].

Specification: 1.85 g, 0.208 fine silver, 19 mm diameter, plain edge.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 no. 771 (new) or 773 (reformé), KM-289; Gad-94.
