Stack's Bowers 2020 ANA sale, lot 21169
SB820-21169r.jpg

This specimen was lot 21169 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it sold for $2,280. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1693-X. Amiens Mint. Louis XIV. NGC MS-64. Single finest certified of the type on the NGC population report with none finer. Struck over a 1691-A (KM-275.1; Gad-216) of the previous type. A bold[ly] struck example of the type exhibiting frosty devices and satiny surfaces with much of the under type is visible. The mintmark and date of the host are clear, but faint adding character this is very pleasing bright and lustrous survivor. An lovely example of the type destined for a fine cabinet of French or world Crowns." The specimen shown is an écu aux palmes ("écu with palms") struck in Amiens during the reign of Louis XIV. The Amiens mint also struck écu aux 8 L in 1693 but these are rare. This type was struck 1693-1701 in large quantities, mostly overstriking older écus ("flans reformés"--see the specimen shown for the visible undertype). It was succeeded by the écu aux insignes. Droulers[2] prices this date about 60% more than the common date, but even a common date is priced 20% higher than an écu à la mèche longue.

Recorded mintage: unknown, all rf[2].

Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, 38-41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM.

Catalog reference: Gad-217, Dr/4 № 510, Dr/2 № 410, Dav-3813, KM 298.21.
