Künker sale 294, lot 3030

This specimen was lot 3030 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €2,000 (about US$2,696 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH, KÖNIGREICH, Louis XIV, 1643-1715. Double louis d'or aux quatre L 1693, A, Paris. Réformation. In US Plastikholder der PCGS mit der Bewertung Genuine - Cleaning - AU Details. GOLD. RR Min. Überprägungsspuren, leicht gereinigt, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, double louis d'or of the four L's, Paris mint, reformed, in PCGS AU details holder. Rare, trace of undertype, tooled, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This type, known as a double louis d'or aux 4 L, was struck 1693-1700, mostly over older coins. Twenty-four mints contributed in 1693.

Recorded mintage: 12,447 fn + 19,513 rf + 11,490 double louis d'or à l'écu.

Specification: 13.50 g, 0.917 fine gold.
