Sincona sale 77, lot 2258

This specimen was lot 2258 in Sincona sale 77 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 1,700 CHF (about US$2,064 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE | Kingdom. Louis XIV. 1643-1715. Louis d'or à l'écu 1693 A, Paris. Réformation. Vorzüglich. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, gold louis of the shield of 1693, Paris mint. Reformed. Extremely fine.)"

This louis d'or à l'écu was struck 1690-93. This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here. The louis d'or à l'écu was succeeded by the louis d'or aux 4 L struck 1693-1700. Both these types are the first somewhat common gold coins since the 1640's but all are expensive relative to the silver écus.

Recorded mintage: 10,281 (new) and 245,808 (restruck) plus 26,389 (new) plus 831,251 (restruck) of the louis d'or aux quatre L (Dr/4 № 412).

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, 24-26 mm diameter, reeded edge. This specimen is 6.72 g.

Catalog reference: KM 278.1, Gadoury 250, Fr-429, Dr/4 № 406, Dr/2 № 258.
