JE162-0992r.jpg

This specimen was lot 992 in Jean Elsen sale 162 (Brussels, June 2025), where it sold for €140 (about US$194 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR écu aux palmes, 1693 D, Lyon. 2e réformation. D/ B. cuir. à d. R/ Écu de France rond, couronné, entre deux palmes. Nettoyé. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, silver écu of the palms of 1693, Lyon mint, second reformation. Obverse: armored bust right; reverse: round crowned arms of France between two palm fronds. Cleaned, Fine - Very Fine.)"

The specimen shown is an écu aux palmes ("écu with palms") struck in Lyon during the reign of Louis XIV. This type was struck 1693-1701 in large quantities, mostly overstriking older écus ("flans reformés"). It was succeeded by the écu aux insignes. Droulers prices this date as common, but even a common date is priced 20% higher than an écu à la mèche longue.

Recorded mintage: 392,382 rf plus 30,490 of the écu aux 8 L.

Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, plain edge, 38-41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, this specimen 26,95 g.
