Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73022

This specimen was lot 73022 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $750. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1693-K. Bordeaux Mint. Louis XIV. NGC AU-55. A nice example, with wonderful mint luster and strong details, this example delivers good charm and appeal." This écu aux huit L was struck at numerous mints 1690-93 and the type is common. The écu aux huit L dated 1693 are a little scarce as the mints switched mid-year to the succeeding écu aux palmes.

Recorded mintage: 4,474 fn + unknown rf, somewhat common plus some écu aux palmes.

Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, 38-41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM.
