Jean Elsen sale 146, lot 121

This specimen was lot 121 in Jean Elsen sale 146 (Brussels, November 2020), where it sold for €2,800 (about US$4,081 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AV louis d'or à l'écu, 1690M couronné, Metz. 1e réformation (petite étoile sous l'écu). D/ T. vieillie à d., coiffée d'une perruque laurée. Différent: rameau dans un croissant (Antoine Talon). R/ Ecu de France couronné. Très rare Gradé PCGS AU55. Superbe. Obverse: laureate and peruked head right, privy mark branch below a crescent; reverse: crowned arms of France. Very rare, Extremely Fine.)"

This type was struck 1690-93 and is the first reasonably common gold coin after the scarce dates of the 1670's and 1680's. This, however, is a rare date.

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, 24-26 mm diameter, designed by Joseph Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 406, Dupl. 1435A; Gad-250; L4L 243.
