Sincona sale 4, lot 4363

This specimen was lot 4363 in Sincona sale 4 (Zürich, October 2011) where it sold for 325 CHF (about US$432 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Frankfurt, Stadt Doppelter Vereinstaler 1843. Adler. Kl. Kr. Vorzüglich-FDC. (Germany, city of Frankfurt, double thaler of 1843, eagle obverse; hairlines, about uncirculated)."

This type was struck by the free city of Frankfurt am Main 1841-47, 1851-55. Its face value of two thalers was equal to 3½ gulden. City view thalers (KM 326) were issued concurrently 1840-44. Frankfurt was annexed by Prussia in 1866 and her coinage ceased.

Recorded mintage: 123,000.
