Heritage sale 3024, lot 23814
from Heritage Auction Galleries

This specimen was lot 23814 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $1,057.50. The catalog description[2] noted, "Louis XIIII gold 1/2 Louis d'Or 1704 Rennes, well-struck, about XF details with light original patina, the flan is bent very slightly between 2 and 3 o'clock, but not creased. The Rennes mintmark is shaped like a 9." This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here. The demi-louis d'or aux insignes, struck 1704-09, was preceded by the demi-louis d'or aux 8 L struck 1701-03. Droulers[1] calls this a common date but the type is quite scarce.

Recorded mintage: 2,100[1].

Specification: 3.37 g, 0.917 fine gold, 20-21 mm diameter. reeded edge, designed by Joseph Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: KM 363.19, Fr-440, Gad-242, Dr/4 № 424A, Dr/2 № 276.
