Aureo sale 243, lot 833

This specimen was lot 833 in Aureo y Calicó sale 243 (Barcelona, April 2012), where it sold for 1,900 € (about US$2,870 including buyer's fees). The catalog[1] noted,

"Carlos III (1759-1788). 1789. Carlos IV. Santiago. DA. 8 escudos. Busto de Carlos III. Ordinal IV. Bellísima. Brillo original. Rara y más en este excepcional estado. S/C-. (Eight escudos of 1789, Santiago mint. Bust of Charles III but ordinal IV. Beautiful, original luster, rare in this quality, about uncirculated.)"

This type was struck at Santiago 1789-91 and tho expensive, is not rare like prior types. It is the transitional type with the bust of Charles III but struck in the name of Charles IV. The old bust was used until 1808 (KM 54) but the ordinal was changed to CAROLUS IIII in 1792.

Recorded mintage: 41,000 (KM 27 and KM 42).

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW.
