Heritage sale 3073, lot 31588
Mexico H3073-31588r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31588 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $3,120. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 8 Escudos 1870/60 Ca-MM MS61 NGC, Chihuahua mint. A charming example of this ten-year overdate type, somewhat soft in the centers but otherwise with sharp detail and appealing aurous luster. Thoroughly pleasing when viewed in-hand." The specimen shown is one of a series struck 1841-71 at the Chihuahua mint. That mint struck mostly eight reales and eight escudos. The other denominations struck, the silver 1/4, 1/2, 1 and 2 reales, are rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a common date.

Specification: 27.07 grams, 0.875 fine gold, .76 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-67; KM-383.1.
