This specimen was lot 71411 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 4 Reales, 1789-So DA. Santiago Mint. Charles III. PCGS FINE-15. Struck during the reign of Charles IV. This RARE and sought after date is the last to feature the name of the recently deceased king Charles III. The present example exhibits plenty of honest wear, but is free from problems and retains pleasing details. Its surfaces are toned to a deep smoky gray with attractive contrast between the fields and devices. A handsome example of this elusive issue. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This type was issued from Santiago 1775-89 and is rare. Four reales struck in the name of Charles IV (KM 38) also exist for 1789.
Recorded mintage: 45,000, including KM 38.
Specification: 13.53 g, 0.896 fine silver.
