This specimen was lot 5449 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabruck, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €850 (about US$1,183 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, August der Jüngere, 1635-1666. Reichstaler 1643, Zellerfeld. 2. Glockentaler. Feine Patina, vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 65, Osnabrück 2001, Nr. 641. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Augustus the Younger, 1635-66, thaler of 1643, Zellerfeld mint, second bell thaler. Fine patina, extremely fine.)"
Anläßlich der Befreiung der Festung Wolfenbüttel von der kaiserlichen Besatzung am 13. November 1643 ließ Herzog August der Jüngere eine Serie von Talern prägen, die auf der Rückseite eine Glocke zeigen, welche die Befreiungsbotschaft verkündet. (On the occasion of the liberation of the fortress of Wolfenbüttel from imperial occupation on November 13, 1643, Duke August the Younger had a series of thalers minted, which show a bell on the back, which proclaims the message of liberation.)"
The year 1643 saw the issue of nine different "bell" thalers (Dav-6363, Dav-6364, Dav-6366 (shown here), -6366A, Dav-6366B, Dav-6371, -6373, Dav-6374, Dav-6375, -6369) in Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, as well as more conventional thalers (Dav-6338, Dav-6347, -6370, -6372).
