Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1643 1/2 thaler KM-412
This specimen was lot 5460 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €480 (about US$668 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, August der Jüngere, 1635-1666. 1/2 Reichstaler 1643, Zellerfeld. 1. Glockenhalbtaler. Hübsche Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 138, Osnabrück 2008, Nr. 6467. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Augustus the Younger, 1635-66, half thaler of 1643, Zellerfeld mint, the first bell half thaler. Handsome patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"
In addition to the well known series of "bell" thalers, the duke also issued a series of "bell" half thalers and quarter thalers. The first bell half thaler is shown here. All were struck to celebrate the departure of imperial troops from his domain during the Thirty Years War.
