Künker sale 354, lot 5465

This specimen was lot 5465 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €600 (about US$835 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, August der Jüngere, 1635-1666. 1/2 Reichstaler 1643, Zellerfeld. 6. Glockenhalbtaler. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Patina, vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Auktion Schweizerischer Bankverein 26, Basel 1991, Nr. 280 und der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 127, Osnabrück 2007, Nr. 3275. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Augustus the Younger, 1635-66, half thaler of 1643, Zellerfeld mint, sixth bell half thaler. Scarce in this quality, attractive example with fine patina, extremely fine.)"

In addition to the well known series of "bell" thalers, the duke also issued a series of "bell" half thalers and quarter thalers. The sixth bell half thaler is shown here. All were struck to celebrate the departure of imperial troops from his domain during the Thirty Years War.
