Künker sale 354, lot 5450

This specimen was lot 5450 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €3,400 (about US$4,732 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, August der Jüngere, 1635-1666. Reichstaler 1643, Zellerfeld. 3. Glockentaler. Mit originaler Glockeninschrift GLORIA. Von großer Seltenheit. Attraktives Exemplar mit schöner Patina, fast vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Auktion Münzen und Medaillen AG 77, Basel 1992, Nr. 568 und der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 127, Osnabrück 2007, Nr. 3266. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Augustus the Younger, 1635-66, thaler of 1643, Zellerfeld mint, third bell thaler. Extremely rare, attractive example with beautiful patina, about extremely fine.)

Der heute als 3. Glockentaler gezählte Taler mit der Inschrift "GLORIA" gehört sicher ans Ende der Serie und war ursprünglich nicht geplant. Es gibt ihn in zwei Varianten: Einmal ist er umgeschnitten aus dem 2. Glockentaler, zum anderen wurden wenige Stücke aus umgeschnittenen Stempeln des 1. Glockentalers geprägt. (The thaler with the inscription "GLORIA", catalogued today as the third bell thaler, belongs safely to the end of the series and was not originally planned. It is available in two versions: on the one hand it is cut from the 2nd bell dies, on the other hand a few pieces were minted from the dies of the 1st bell taler.)"

Anläßlich der Befreiung der Festung Wolfenbüttel von der kaiserlichen Besatzung am 13. November 1643 ließ Herzog August der Jüngere eine Serie von Talern prägen, die auf der Rückseite eine Glocke zeigen, welche die Befreiungsbotschaft verkündet. (On the occasion of the liberation of the fortress of Wolfenbüttel from imperial occupation on November 13, 1643, Duke August the Younger had a series of thalers minted, which show a bell on the back, which proclaims the message of liberation.)"

The year 1643 saw the issue of nine different "bell" thalers (Dav-6363, Dav-6364, Dav-6366, -6366A, Dav-6366B, Dav-6371, -6373, Dav-6374, Dav-6375, -6369 (shown here)) in Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, as well as more conventional thalers (Dav-6338, Dav-6347, -6370, -6372).
