Künker sale 354, lot 5453

This specimen was lot 5453 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €18,000 (about US$25,051 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, August der Jüngere, 1635-1666. Reichstaler 1643, Zellerfeld. 4. Glockentaler. Fünffach behelmtes und verziertes, 11feldiges Wappen//Quader, davor Glockenklöppel. Von größter Seltenheit. Sehr attraktives Exemplar mit herrlicher Patina, vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Slg. Freiherr Wilhelm Knigge, Auktion H. S. Rosenberg 23, Hannover 1929, Nr. 642 und der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 6, Osnabrück 1987, Nr. 589. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Augustus the Younger, 1635-66, thaler of 1643, Zellerfeld mint, fouth bell thaler. Obverse: five helmeted and eleven-fold arms; reverse: cube with bell clapper. Extremely rare, very attractive example with handsome patina, extremely fine.)"

Anläßlich der Befreiung der Festung Wolfenbüttel von der kaiserlichen Besatzung am 13. November 1643 ließ Herzog August der Jüngere eine Serie von Talern prägen, die auf der Rückseite eine Glocke zeigen, welche die Befreiungsbotschaft verkündet. (On the occasion of the liberation of the fortress of Wolfenbüttel from imperial occupation on November 13, 1643, Duke August the Younger had a series of thalers minted, which show a bell on the back, which proclaims the message of liberation.)"

The year 1643 saw the issue of nine different "bell" thalers (Dav-6363, Dav-6364, Dav-6366, -6366A, Dav-6366B, Dav-6371, -6373, Dav-6374, Dav-6375, Dav-6369) in Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, as well as more conventional thalers (Dav-6338, Dav-6347, -6370, -6372).
