Kunker sale 293, lot 486

This specimen was lot 486 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €800 (about US$1,078 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, HERZOGTUM August der Jüngere, 1635-1666. Reichstaler 1643, Zellerfeld. 1. Glockentaler. Hübsche Patina, fast vorzüglich. Herzog August ließ anläßlich der Befreiung der Festung Wolfenbüttel von kaiserlicher Besatzung am 13. November 1643 eine Serie von Talern prägen, auf deren Rückseite eine Glocke dargestellt ist, die die frohe Nachricht verkündet. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, Augustus the Younger, 1635-66, first bell thaler of 1643, Zellerfeld mint. Handsome patina, about extremely fine. The duke struck this first bell thaler (one of nine) on the occasion of the liberation of Wolfenbuttel fortress.)"

The year 1643 saw the issue of nine different "bell" thalers (Dav-6363, -6364, -6366, -6366A, -6366B, -6371, -6373, -6374, -6375, -6369) in Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, as well as more conventional thalers (Dav-6338, -6347, -6370, -6372).
