This specimen is a rather scarce date of a series struck 1869-90 at the San Luis Potosi mint, which closed in 1893. An overdate, 1876/5, is recorded for this date. This twenty-five centavos piece replaced the two reales struck since colonial times. It, in turn, was replaced by a smaller twenty centavos piece in 1898. This specimen was lot 9124 in Ponterio sale 159 (Baltimore, March 2011), where it sold for $575. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Potosi. 25 Centavos, 1876/5-PiH. Rare in high grade. Light attractive toning, nice strike. NGC MS-64."
Specification: 6.77 g, .903 fine silver, .196 troy oz ASW.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Catalog reference: KM 406.8.
