This specimen was lot 7000 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $223.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Peso, 1872-MoM/C. NGC MS-62. Well struck, nicely toned with attractive luster and good eye appeal." This specimen is a better date of a series struck 1870-1905 at the Mexico City mint. Mexico City is the commonest mint, followed by Guanajuato, Culiacan, Zacatecas (scarce), Hermosillo (rare), Alamos (rare) and Chihuahua (rare). Even the common dates have low mintages but the type was widely hoarded, making it reasonably available today.
Recorded mintage: 3,000.
Specification: 1.69 g, .875 fine gold, .047 troy oz AGW.
Catalog reference: Fr-157; KM-410.5.
