The first specimen was lot 43224 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $9,000. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE. National Convention. Silver 5 Sols Module Essai (Pattern), Years 4 (of Liberty) & 1 (of the Republic)/1792. Paris Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-63. Lettered edge. By M. Brézin. VERY RARE and extremely attractive, this wholly unrivaled specimen presents exceptionally inviting iridescent toning upon each side, with hues of cobalt magenta, and seafoam green evident throughout. No other examples of the type in silver have been seen at either major services, and a view of auction records over the past quarter century reveal a single representative, and one that is vastly inferior to the present specimen, to have sold in March 2024, realizing a total of €2,880. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Weil on 23 Ocotober 1996). Ex: H. Gabilly Collection (Alain Weil - 10/1996) Lot # 198."

The second specimen was lot 43237 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE. National Convention. Silvered Bronze 5 Sols Module Essai (Pattern), ND (1792/3). Paris Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-62. Plain edge. By M. Brézin. An extremely interesting and VERY RARE variant of the type, this specimen not only presents a different metal type (silvered bronze) than is generally encountered, but also exhibits a plain edge and denticles near the rims on each side that differ from those usually encountered. Enchantingly toned, with subtle cobalt and violet hues scattered throughout. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Elsen on 25 January 2002). Ex: Jean Elsen 68 (12/2001) Lot # 1484."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: bronze, 38 mm diameter, the first specimen silver, 31.07 g; the second specimen silvered bronze, 15.89 g.

Catalog reference: Maz-365a (R4); Guilloteau-356. The second specimen is cf. Maz-373 (bronze & lettered edge).
