This specimen was lot 1264 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $1,150. The catalog description[1] noted,
"MEXICO. Republic. 8 Escudos, 1863 Go PF. Guanajuato. Hand inscribing law book with quill and Liberty Cap. Rv. Bold eagle facing r. with snake in beak. Double struck with small rotation between strikes on the obverse. Notable on the peripheral lettering, arm, and cap. Minor shallow scratches in field above arm, toned with light crimson-copper at the rims. A common coin with added appeal. About Uncirculated."
The Guanajuato mint was the most prolific issuer of gold during the Republic.
