Jean Elsen list 265, lot 752
Austria 1624 thaler rev JElsen 265-752.jpg

This specimen was lot 752 in Jean Elsen list 265 (Brussels, July-September 2013) where it was offered for €575 (about US$759 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SAINT EMPIRE, Ferdinand II (1619-1637), AR Taler, 1624, Graz. Pour la Styrie. Droit: B. l. et cuirassé à droite. Revers: Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Superbe. (Holy Roman Empire, Ferdinand II (1619-37), silver thaler of 1624, Graz mint, struck for Styria. Obverse: laureate, armored bust to right; reverse: crowned arms, collar of the Golden Fleece around, extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1620-25 in numerous varieties (Dav-3328, -3329, -3329V, -3330, -3330V). In addition, other Austrian thalers for 1624 include Dav-3078 (Vienna), -3106 (Graz), -3087 (Vienna), -3123, -3144, -3146, -3146A, -3104A, -3330A, -3092, -3080, -3081, -3085 (Vienna), -3086, -3083, -3084, -3087A and -3345 (Ensisheim). Quite a challenge for those used to collecting neat rows of Lincoln cents.

Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.06 g.
