Sincona sale 9, lot 4850

This specimen was lot 4850 in Sincona sale 9 (Zürich, October 2012), where it sold for 170 CHF (about US$215 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ÖSTERREICH Erzherzog Leopold V. 1619-1632. Taler 1624, Hall. Gutes sehr schön. (Austria, archduke Leopold V, 1619-32, thaler of 1624, Hall mint, good very fine.)"

This type was struck 1620-25 in numerous varieties (Dav-3328, -3329, -3329V, -3330, -3330V). A klippe version exists (Dav-3330A). In addition, other Austrian thalers for 1624 include Dav-3104, -3078, Dav-3106, -3087, Dav-3123, -3144, -3146, -3146A, -3104A, -3330A, -3092, -3080, -3081, -3083, Dav-3084, Dav-3085, -3086, and -3087A. Quite a challenge for those used to collecting neat rows of Lincoln cents.

Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common.
