Künker sale 406, lot 4487

This specimen was lot 4487 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €1,400 (about US$1,837 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Ferdinand II. 1592-1618-1637. Kippertaler (150 Kreuzer) 1623, Graz. RR Feine Patina, sehr schön. (Austria, Ferdinand II, 1618-37, kipper thaler or 150 kreuzer of 1623, Graz mint. Very rare, fine patina, very fine.)"

Kipper 150 kreuzer were struck at Joachimsthal (KM 310), Kuttenberg (KM 309), Prague (KM 308), Brünn (KM 418), Olmutz (KM 444), Graz (KM 422, shown here) and Vienna (KM 423) for the Hapsburg emperor Ferdinand II. Altho nominally a thaler, it is too light and is probably debased as well, being an inflationary issue (1620-24) of the Thirty Years War, along with six, 15, 24, 30, 48, 60, 75, 120 and 300 groschen. Once the kipper period was over, there was a concerted effort to recall and melt down the debased issues, accounting for their rarity today.
