Sincona sale 94, lot 2220

This specimen was lot 2220 in Sincona sale 94 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 180 CHF (about US$250 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RDR / ÖSTERREICH Ferdinand II. 1619-1637. 48-Kipper Kreuzer 1623, Graz. Selten. Gutes sehr schön. Korrodierte Oberfläche. (Holy Roman Empire, Ferdinand II, 1619-37, 48 kipper kreuzer of 1623, Graz mint. Rare, Good Very Fine, Corroded surface.)"

Kipper 48 kreuzer were struck at Brünn, Klagenfurt (KM 443), Olmutz, St.-Veit (KM 409), Vienna (KM 317), Graz (shown here and KM 408) and Hall for the Hapsburg emperor Ferdinand II. Altho nominally a two-thirds thaler, it is too light and is probably debased as well, being an inflationary issue (1620-24) of the Thirty Years War, along with six, 15, 24, 30, 48, 60, 75, 120, 150 and 300 groschen. Once the kipper period was over, there was a concerted effort to recall and melt down the debased issues, accounting for their rarity today.
