This specimen was lot 43202 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, <blockquote>"[[France|FRANCE]]. National Convention. Bronze 2 Sols Essai (Pattern), 1792. Paris Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-64 Brown. Plain edge. By A. Dupré. An enticing and resoundingly attractive example of the type, this EXTREMELY RARE variant features a bronze alloy and displays a combination of the correct spelling for RÈGNE, the presence of two stars, and the legend in the exergue, all while glistening with robust brilliance and luster. From the Richard Margolis Collection."</blockquote> Altho dated 1792, we surmise this was made later, most likely in 1793. A one sol pattern also exists with this design. The republic was declared in September 1792 but the king's bust was not removed from the coinage until after his trial and execution in January 1793.

The first specimen was lot 43202 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE. From the Richard Margolis Collection."

The second specimen was lot 43241 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE. National Convention. Bronze 2 Sols Module Essai (Pattern), Year I/1792. Paris Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-65 Brown. Plain edge. By M. Brézin. An enchanting method of striking trial, this type features a serpent-entwined caduceus surmounted by a Phrygian cap. Rich red-brown surfaces, with a delightful even nature throughout. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Zander in 1956). Ex: Randolph Zander FPL 26 (1956) Lot # 432."

The third specimen was lot 43243 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $3,840. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE. National Convention. Silver 2 Sols Module Essai (Pattern), Year I/1792. Paris Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-63. Plain edge. By M. Brézin. Already an EXTREMELY RARE type in silver, this specimen striking is made that much more desirable on account of its plain edge, deviating from the lettered edge type mentioned as an R3 in Mazard. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Hans Schulman)."

Altho dated 1792, we surmise these were made later, most likely in 1793. A one sol pattern also exists with the first specimen's design. The republic was declared in September 1792 but the king's bust was not removed from the coinage until after his trial and execution in January 1793.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: bronze. The second specimen is 18.81 g.

Catalog reference: cf. Maz-335 (bell metal & no legend in obv. exergue). The second specimen is Maz-377 var. The third specimen is Maz-377a var.
