Mexico 1870Mo 2-5 pesos rev Stacks 110-1439.jpg

This specimen was lot 1439 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $402.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Republic. 2½ Pesos, 1870 Mo C. Mexico City. Bold eagle facing r. with snake in beak. Rv. Value in wreath. Lightly cleaned. Minor handling lines but the strike is sharp and the surfaces attractive for this issue. About Uncirculated." The type is also recorded from Culiacan, Durango, Guanajuato, Alamos, Hermosillo and Zacatecas but Mexico City is by far the most prolific issuer. The series, never popular, ended in 1893.

Recorded mintage: 820.

Specification: 4.23 g, 0.875 fine gold, .119 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 411.5, Fr-148.
