This specimen was lot 22321 in Heritage sale 3021 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $9,987.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 8 Escudos 1844 GC-MP, AU53 NGC. Sharply struck and lustrous, with reflective fields. The first-year Guadalupe Calvo 8 Escudo issue and one of the more difficult dates of this series." The specimen shown is one of a series struck 1844-52 at the Guadalupe y Calvo mint. That mint struck all the silver and gold denominations used during the republic, from the quarter real to the eight escudos. None are common, tho the gold tends to appear more often than the silver.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW.
