Shown is a balance scale peso, of a type struck 1869-1873. This specimen was lot 24418 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Peso, 1870-MoM. NGC MS-61. Sharply struck with soft satin luster. Brilliant and attractive. From the Alex Siegel Collection." It was not a success in the export market, the destination for most of [[Mexico]]'s silver, so the type was discontinued in 1873 in favor of the resumption of the "cap and ray" eight reales. Mexico SB118-24418r.jpg

From the Alex Siegel Collection." It was not a success in the export market, the destination for most of Mexico's silver, so the type was discontinued in 1873 in favor of the resumption of the "cap and ray" eight reales. This issue from Mexico City is common. Other mints include Guadalajara (rare), Durango (scarce), Culiacan (common), Oaxaca (scarce), Chihuahua (common), Guanajuato (common), Zacatecas (common) and Potosi (scarce).

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Recorded mintage: 5,115,000, a common date.

Catalog reference: KM-408.5.
