Stack's Bowers 2025 ANA sale, lot 43045
SB825-43045r.jpg

This specimen was lot 43045 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Oklahoma City, OK, August 2025), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Kingdom. Sol, 1791-B. Rouen Mint. Louis XVI. PCGS VF-25. Second semester. Struck somewhat off-center, this circulated specimen remains wholesome and alluring, along with also being quite RARE. Margolis notes that, due to its size (33mm) and weight, it was struck upon a larger planchet evidently intended for a 2 Soles from the ensuing Constitutional period. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Jules Florange & Cie in Paris on 15 February 1968 for $5.50)." The type was struck 1777-91 and is known from Rouen for 1785 and 1788-91. These circulated in France until the 1850's when they were finally called in and melted.

Recorded mintage: 1,833,000, a common date.

Specification: 12.24 g, copper, 28-31 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Benjamin Duvivier. This specimen 24.06 g, 33 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 891, KM-578.3; Gad-350.
