Stack's Bowers 2025 ANA sale, lot 42189
SB825-42189r.jpg

This specimen was lot 42189 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Oklahoma City, OK, August 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1694-W. Lille Mint. Louis XIV. PCGS MS-62. This nicely preserved example displays light attractive mottled gray patina with much remaining luster. The overstirke is bold with well-formed design features with traces of the undertype present. Wholesome and original looking, this piece offers good eye appeal and is sure to catch the attention of many collectors." This type was struck 1693-1701 in large quantities, mostly overstriking older écus ("flans reformés") and this is a fairly common date. Do not confuse it with the écu de Flandre (Dav-3815), also struck at Lille, which is heavier and has quartered arms on the reverse.

Recorded mintage: unknown, all rf.

Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, 38-41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 510, Dr/2 № 410, Dav-3813, KM-298.20; Gad-217.
