Jean Elsen sale 143, lot 1661

This specimen was lot 1661 in Jean Elsen sale 143 (Brussels, December 2019), where it sold for €420 (about US$548 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR écu aux palmes, 1694A, Paris. Flan neuf. D/ B. à d., cuirassé à l'antique. R/ Ecu de France rond, couronné, entre deux palmes. Belle patine. Très Beau à Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, silver écu of the palms of 1694, Paris mint, new blank. Obverse: armored bust right; reverse: crowned round arms of France between two palms. Nice patina, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

The écu aux palmes was struck 1693-1701, the majority over older types. The first two years are common but the issues dwindled later. This is a common date.

Recorded mintage: 848,079 + unknown flans reformées[2].

Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, 37-38 mm diameter, lettered edge, this specimen 27,21 g.
