Stephen Album sale 43, lot 1211

This specimen was lot 1211 in Stephen Album sale 43 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2022), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE: Louis XIV, 1643-1715, AR ½ ecu, La Rochelle mint, 1694-H, lovely steel grey tone with hints of a red-gold tone in the legends, overstruck on undetermined host, NGC graded MS63. The only mint state example of this mint and date graded at NGC." This type was struck 1693-1701 in large quantities, mostly overstriking older half écus ("flans reformés"). It was succeeded by the demi-écu aux insignes. Droulers[2] notes this date as somewhat scarce. Edge lettering was introduced to the half écu about 1686.

Recorded mintage: unknown but all rf[2].

Specification: 13.72 g, 0.917 fine silver, 22-25 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, designed by Joseph Roëttiers.
