JE163-1864r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1864 in Jean Elsen sale 163 (Brussels, November 2025), where it sold for €2,000 (about US$2,310 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AV demi-louis d'or aux quatre L, 1694 Y, Bourges. 2e réformation. D/ T. âgée à d., coiffée d'une grande perruque laurée. R/ Croix formée de quatre lis couronnés, cantonnée de quatre L. Rare. Réformé sur un demi-louis d'or à l'écu. Sur flan large, avec brillant de frappe. Fine griffe au revers. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, gold half louis of the four L's of 1694, Bourges mint, second reformation. Obverse: old laureate and peruked bust right; reverse: cross formed of four crowned lilies, cantonned with four L's. Rare, struck over a demi-louis d'or à l'écu. On a large planchet, with mint luster, hairlines on the reverse, Extremely Fine.)"

The demi-louis d'or aux quatre L was struck at all the French mints 1693-1700, mostly by overstriking older coins. While edge reeding was introduced to the French mints about 1687, this is the first series to use it on a routine basis. The 1694-Y is a slightly better date of a rare type. The next issue of demi-louis from this mint would be in 1702.

Recorded mintage: unknown but all rf[2].

Specification: 3.37 g, 0.917 fine gold, 20-21 mm diameter, reeded edge, this specimen is 3,34 g.
