Stack's Bowers October 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74667
SB1024-74667r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74667 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1694-E. Tours Mint. Louis XIV. NGC EF Details--Cleaned. This decently preserved example exhibits a strong strike with much evidence of the undertype still visible. The surfaces displays a pleasing rich gray patina with a slight iridescent sheen. Close inspection reveals evidence of a past cleaning, now slightly subdued. Despite its shortcomings a handsome example of this seldom encountered mint. Ex: Coin Galleries (12/2009) Lot # 474. Ex: Coin Galleries (3/2009) Lot # 295." The écu aux palmes was struck 1693-1701, the majority over older types. The first two years are common but the issues dwindled later. This is a better date.

Recorded mintage: 48,173 fn (rare) + unknown rf (scarce).

Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, designed by Joseph Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 510, Dr/2 № 410, Dav-3813; KM-298.7; Gad-217.
